A person’s lips are arguably one of his/her most prominent and beautiful features. However, there are some forces that work against perfect, plump and well-defined lips. A few of these forces include time, sun-exposure, smoking and hereditary factors such as thin lips. But all is not lost! Lip augmentation is a highly successful procedure that facilitates the creation or restoration of natural, picture-perfect lips.
What is lip augmentation?
Lip augmentation refers to the process of adding shape, structure and volume to the lips with an injectable dermal filler. At The Refinery Skin Clinic we treat the entire peri-oral area. We look at the upper and lower lip, chin, marionette lines and nasal labial folds to give lips a natural look.
What is a dermal filler?
A dermal filler is a natural substance injected into the body for the purpose of adding volume and shape around the injection site. While, historically, collagen was the number one go-to for dermal fillers, today hyaluronic acid is more commonly used. Hyaluronic acid – a substance naturally produced by the body – is considerably more effective, and carries less likelihood of side effects than its collagen predecessor.
There are a wide variety of hyaluronic acid fillers on the market that yield a wide variety of results. Here at The Refinery Skin Clinic we work with the Allergan line of fillers which include Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Vobella and Vollure.
Who is a candidate for lip augmentation?
If you desire the appearance of fuller, more well-defined lips or if you would like to reduce the appearance of vertical lip lines, you are a candidate for lip augmentation. However, lip augmentation is not recommended for people who smoke or have an active infection (like cold sores).
Prior to lip augmentation it might be helpful to look up celebrities with subtle, natural-looking lip augmentations to help you envision and communicate the results you desire!
What can I expect from a lip augmentation procedure?
Although many clinics use very fine needles to inject the dermal filler, at The Refinery Skin Clinic we use micro-cannulas for increased comfort and for reduction of post-procedure swelling and bruising.
Prior to the dermal filler injection, a topical anesthetic is applied to ease possible discomfort. After carefully marking injection sites, your Injection specialist delivers the tissue-shaping and supporting gel via the micro-cannulas in a highly-controlled manner. The procedure is quick and virtually painless and you will begin to notice results immediately.
Following the injections ice may be gently applied to reduce any discomfort and swelling. It is best to avoid the use of lipstick or other lip products for a short time after the procedure. After your lips heal completely from the augmentation the results should look and feel natural.
How long do the effects of lip augmentation last?
The shaping, structuring and volumizing effects of lip augmentation last anywhere from 6-12 months before the dermal filler is eventually absorbed by the body. Subsequent treatments will likely require less dermal filler than the initial treatment.
